Sonita

Sonita is a rapper and adored by the girls at her shelter in Tehran. Back in Afghanistan, her family have other plans for the 18 year old. Her brother wants to marry and will sell his sister for the required peshkesh (Bride Price), to a much older man. In Iran it’s illegal for women to sing, but Sonita searches for a recording studio willing to produce her music, knowing that her mother’s on the way to fetch her. Like it or not, filmmaker Maghami is faced with an ethical dilemma – impartiality or  interference?  Featuring what must be one of hip-hop’s most powerful music videos, Sonita is the story of one exceptional girl, with the courage to speak for the countless silenced.
