In 2015, as Rhodes was toppled from his pedestal, a nation-defining change was fomenting across the land – the #FeesMustFall movement. Fresh from chronicling a student-led, decolonial process at Wits, iconoclastic filmmaker Aryan Kaganof turns his camera and critique on the University of Stellenbosch. Here, ostensibly everyone may a ‘Matie’ be, but black exclusion and racist policies persist, protected by powerful gatekeepers. In conversation with students and lecturers alike, Kaganof pulls no punches, aiming at the often-sheltered debates around white alliance and privileged spaces. Essential viewing for those of us still uncertain of the issues at stake in the decolonialisation of education – and beyond – Opening Stellenbosch takes everyone willing to luister behind the scenes of a revolution.
