Angelou defies categorisation and her influence is as large, lustrous and enduring as the woman herself. Outgrowing the scars of prejudice and abuse in the Depression-era South, she rose and continued to rise: from nightclub dancer to confidante of Luther King and Malcolm X, from journalist in an Africa in the raptures of decolonization to the front lines of the Civil Rights movement. A consummate entertainer,  Angelou found yet another voice in the written word. Her seminal autobiography ‘I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings’, translated the anguish of oppression into a protest song for a new generation.
