Screens with The Art of Flying
Alica Alonso, Prima Ballerina Assoluta, is still, at age 90, a source of inspiration and not just for dancers. Despite being partially blind since the age of 19 she enjoyed phenomenal international success, her performances lauded across the globe. Back home in Cuba she founded the Alicia Alonso Ballet Company, which eventually became the Ballet Nacional de Cuba. The film follows three generations of ballerinas dedicated to dance and in pursuit of excellence. Viengsay Valdes is already a member of the company, whilst young Amanda Duarte is desperate to join. The price exacted is high and she perseveres, with bloodied feet and a bruised ego, determined to follow in the beautifully choreographed and precise steps of her role model.
