Johnson is an award-winning documentary cinematographer who has worked with Michael Moore and Laura Poitras. Her credits include Derrida (2002) and Citizenfour (2014), about Edward Snowden. After a failed attempt to make a film set in Afghanistan, Johnson began to interrogate her large archive. This film collages various bits of footage filmed on assignments in places like Bosnia, Cuba, Liberia, Nigeria and Uganda with material shot in New York and Wyoming in a bid to create a personal memoir built out of images and moments from other peoples’ lives. Although largely a meditation on the constructed nature of the film image and the ethics of intimacy and access, this film also offers a candid study of memory, its slipperiness and its frailty.
