Affliction

The devastating Ebola outbreak of 2013 which swept through West Africa has left a lasting impact on the region and its people. Dealing with the epidemic was one aspect of saving lives, garnering international support another. The dedicated MSF staff, assisted by locals swathed in protective clothing, armed with litres of disinfectant and an urgent desire to help, were in the forefront of confronting the virus. Their ebullience at each life saved in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone are sadly undermined by the loss of thousands of lives. Fighting a disease, bureaucracy, apathy and stigmatisation, this was a battle with few winners but many heroes. A harrowing indictment on the disparity of health care across the world and a tribute to those who fight it.
