Ashley Kriel, the “Che Guevara of Bonteheuwel” was murdered by the Apartheid police in 1987. He was only 20 years old. The activist and MK soldier was an iconic leader of Cape Town’s anti-apartheid youth movement, drawing many into struggle through his tireless organising, powerful speeches and magnetic personality.  Cloete tells his story through intimate testimonies from family, comrades, mentors and friends alongside haunting audio recordings of the hero himself. Ultimately the film reveals a family and community denied justice by a liberation machine that saw killers walk free in the name of reconciliation. Action Komandant is a vital historical document whose story finds relevance today, as a new generation of young activists demand historical redress.
